A muzzle-loaded rifle is defined as; "a shoulder fired firearm of which there are spiral grooves cut into the bore called rifling which consists of lands and grooves, of which is loaded with gunpowder and bullet from the muzzle end of the firearms barrel or muzzle-loaded, shouldered, then a trigger is depressed and fired." A muzzleloader is any firearm into which the projectile and usually the propellant charge is loaded from the muzzle of the gun (from the open end of the gun’s barrel). This is distinct from the more popular modern designs of breech-loading firearms. The term “muzzleloader” may also apply to the marksman who specializes in the shooting of muzzle loading firearms.
The early settlers gained a reputation for hardy independence and rifle marksmanship as a way of life, by the 1750s it was common to see frontiersmen carrying a new and distinctive style of rifle, the longrifle it was used with great skill to provide tens of thousands of deer hides for the British leather industry.
The Bouse Hills Muzzle Loaders club is a hardy group of individuals with an interest in promoting and preserving the nation's historical heritage in the sport of muzzle loading through events, recreational, educational, historical and cultural activities such as match competition, hunting, gun making and safety, historical re-enactments, exhibits, museums, libraries, and other related programs.
